Getting to Know Wendy S. Hales

They are so many amazingly talented authors out there and I've been privileged to meet and get to know a few of them. Wendy Hales is one of these awesome writers. Her book Immortal Becoming (The Enlightened Species Book One) is a fast-paced paranormal romance that is very much on the steamy side, which will appeal to some and some it won't. Wendy is not only talented, but bubbly and exudes so much fun, you can't help but smile when you talk to her. She was gracious enough to answer some questions and help us get to know her better.

Wendy, tell us a little about yourself.

Wendy: I'm a small town girl! Family is everything even when they drive me out of my mind. My husband and I own a coffee shop that keeps us both busy and it's a lot of fun too. Our children are grown and moved out. Awww the peace of an empty nest is bliss. I have two granddaughters and a new grandson. Grandchild are parents reward for surviving our kids teenage years! I have a Boston Terrier named Tank. He thinks he's big so I gave him a big-doggie name rather than crushing his ego. My husband, however, doesn't feel the same. He's saddle Tank with the nick-name Freaktard. I love golf, I've also found pounding the drums of a good game of Rock Band quite liberating.

See what I mean? You're just oozing with the fun gene:-) When did you start writing and why?

Wendy: Honestly I can't remember a time I didn't write. I got an D in English and an A in creative writing (Figures, they didn't grade on grammar.). Needless to say that is the most difficult part of the craft for me. Luckily I have MAD check writing skills when it comes to paying people far more qualified than myself for things like that while I continue to learn. I passed math by writing a paper on some abstract math theory rather than actually doing my homework. The only thing I excelled at where sports and writing. I try not to take the gift of storytelling for granted, but it comes very naturally. Writing mechanics will be my task master for life. I read my first romance novel when I was eleven I still remember the title, Skye O'Malley. Grounded at the time, I pillaged it out of my mom's personal book stash. Way too old for me but I've had a love affair with romance ever since.

I can relate. I was reading Harlequin at twelve and couldn't get enough of them:-) How did you come up with Immortal Becoming?

Wendy: I had an idea for a story about some of the different species I'd created for past short stories written for personal amusement coming together in under a symbiotic dream. I narrowed them down to represent Earth with 'pre-enlightened' humanity. Air with winged vampires with a Latin based name of Volaticus (The Hulven/Elven race definitions developed later). The center of the earth with Tellus, and the Aquaties have water. I researched for months to create the different social spheres, demographics, strife, lifestyles, communities etc. for each species. Looked for Lore, Myths, legends, psychic abilities that could be applicable to each one, then strove to make them benefit and need the others in some way. Ironically I built the world before Jess & Shane were glimmers in my mind. Truth is, I never set out to write a novel, let alone a series. When Jess started poking in my head incessantly, I listened. After a while, I saw finishing my first full novel as a challenge.

Do you have any upcoming projects?

Wendy: I do! Shadow Revealed, The Enlightened Species Book Two will hopefully be released this month. Shadowed Magic, A Novella of The Enlightened Species is targeted for End of May/First of June. Fires Touch, The Enlightened Species Book Three is what I'm currently writing.

Busy, busy lady. Thanks for taking the time to let us get to know you better. Immortal Becoming is available on Amazon.com

Ahhh, I Love Being a Writer!!!

Thought for Today
"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great." Mark Twain

Some days my writer's brain is on overdrive and I can't seem to shut it off no matter what I do. That's a good thing, right? Then there are days when coming up with even one line is like pulling a tooth with no Novocaine. (Think Chuck Nolan in Cast Away) Yes, it is that painful. Then there are days like today, when brain and inspiration are copacetically in harmony and all is right with the world.
So, after finishing another story today, I have declared the next two weeks I Love Being a Writer Season! Celebrate with me by grabbing some chocolate and a good book (a large Symphony bar is an awesome choice) and escape into another world for a while. If you are a writer trying to meet a deadline, just take an hour to enjoy that happy place. You will be glad you did:-)

On April 6th, my new novelette Say What You Need to Say will be available on Amazon in Kindle format.

Free-spirited Capri Harris has always embraced life to the fullest, but a major health trial brings unexpected changes and her outlook shifts, leaving her with doubts of her worth to any man. Like the force of a hurricane, Jagger Colby enters Capri's life, weakening her resolve and shaking the walls of self-preservation she has tried so hard to build around her heart. But Capri knows that once Jagger discovers the truth about her, he will walk away and never look back.

When words mean everything, say what you need to say.

Excerpt

Knoxville, Tennessee

“Come on, Doc. You've known my family for years. Shoot, as a baby, I even peed on you when you changed my diaper and initiated you into the family, so just say it.”

Unsmiling, the older man rubs his temples with his thumb and index finger a moment before meeting my eyes. “Capri, you have ovarian cancer.”

Hearing those words completely shifts my world. I am almost twenty years old with my whole life ahead of me. I am just beginning to live, to plan, to dream, to experience. Cancer has never been a part of the plan.

Four days ago the tumor made itself known, and even then, cancer never entered my mind. I mean, young women get benign cysts all the time. Okay, not all the time, but it happens, especially–I am told–when it runs in the family. Both of my grandmothers passed away from ovarian cancer in their later years. They were old and it just happened.

Still, isn't supposed to happen to me.

My parents are what people classify as free-spirited granola naturalists. All of my mother's prenatal care was given by a midwife and the births were all home water births. We are one of the healthiest families I know. Dad's Catawba Indian ancestry passed down fifty different ways to use corn, and Mom brought her island cooking skills when she immigrated from Jamaica. Twenty-five years in the states and she still speaks with a strong Jamaican brogue, especially when she's angry or upset.

Living on a ranch my whole life, my four older brothers and I were raised on natural everything–raw milk, whole grains, organic vegetables we grow ourselves, fresh eggs laid by our own chickens, beef from our cattle, bacon and pork from our pigs, herbs grown in our greenhouse–so unhealthy eating is definitely not the cause of the disease living inside me. It is genetics.

Through an emotional haze I listen to the man I've known as Uncle Jake all my life go over the hysterectomy procedure and treatment afterward. He says my healthy lifestyle is definitely in my favor and recovery will most likely be quick, and hopefully, permanent. Still, my brain translates his words into one repeated line:

I will never be able to have a baby.

I am sent to a counselor down the hall who gives me a packet of information and suggestions for coping with the coming changes. With her red bouffant hair, flared skirt and pink cat-frame glasses, it's hard to take her seriously. I figure it must be fifties week around the office, possibly a morale booster. As she counsels me to face this ordeal head on, I bite back a sarcastic retort of, “What else am I going to do, close my eyes and wait for it to go away?” But I know she is only doing her job and I do appreciate the information.

I walk out of the medical building feeling like a completely different person. I know my life will soon change. It is inevitable and I accept this.

No counseling needed.

Book: The Alias
Author: Mandi Tucker Slack

About the Book
After a long and difficult divorce, Jacey thinks the worst is over. Little does she know she'll soon be forced to go undercover to protect her family, and in the process, she'll risk losing her identity, her future, and her heart. With a lightning pace, a good dose of humor, and a plot that's full of suspense, this thrilling novel is an edge-of-your-seat read.

I mainly read romance, but I love a good thriller, too, and The Alias definitely took me on a ride. It really is a fast paced book without a slow spot in the story. For me, parts of the story hit close to home because of being raised by a mother and a stepfather who was emotionally and physically abusive to her and me. But in no way was the story a downer, it was completely the opposite. My heart went out to Jacey and her son, and I cheered when her nightmare was finally over and she was able to opened herself up to love again, and then was blessed with a man who would never hurt her. Every woman should be so blessed.

That's Amore!

I love love! I love being in love, giving love, and receiving love. So I thought I would share a few Valentine's Day thoughts.

For you see, each day I love you more
Today more than yesterday and less than tomorrow.
~Rosemonde Gerard

Love is a symbol of eternity. It wipes out all sense of time, destroying all memory of a beginning and all fear of an end. ~Author Unknown

Love - a wildly misunderstood although highly desirable malfunction of the heart which weakens the brain, causes eyes to sparkle, cheeks to glow, blood pressure to rise and the lips to pucker.
~Author Unknown

Anyone can catch your eye, but it takes someone special to catch your heart.
~Author Unknown

And my personal favorite:
I don't understand why Cupid was chosen to represent Valentine's Day. When I think about romance, the last thing on my mind is a short, chubby toddler coming at me with a weapon. ~Author Unknown

In honor of the upcoming day of love, I'm giving away copies of my Passionate Hearts Novelette Collection. Just leave your email address in the comment section or send me an email at jewela40@gmail.com and I'll send these short stories out to you!
